i need a lot of silence ;)
During my vacation October last year i received an email from a Dutch radio program with the question if i would like to be the professional at their table talking some sense about silence because that had to be my niche since i am a minimalist music composer .. eh .. yes .. maybe .. (i had to decline unfortunately because i was not able to make it due to my trip to Iceland ; wondrous various, colorful, ambient, desolate landscapes filled with silence). I never thought too much about silence as my niche .. the radio-program editor wrote actually something that still resonates with me because silence is a keyword in my music and also in my existence .. .. i live my life in silence .. during the day i never listen to music .. just the sounds of the birds in the garden or the wind in the trees .. my inner-voice can be loud enough haha
I am easily overwhelmed by sound eg : sirens, a lot of people talking, yelling .. the ironic thing is that i work with sound .. i play the harp obviously but i never thought about my instrument as too much noise .. maybe because i don't see my instrument as a wooden thing with strings but as an extension of who i am that expresses my inner-shit and joy ;)
Visits with friends/family and work i plan carefully so i there is time in my agenda to "recover in silence" .. having people around me cost me energy (also ++++++ energy causes fatigue due to a chronic fatigue and pain syndrome) .. i need to be alone and in silence to be creative and actually to feel better .. i really am a hermit and that is ok people ! i am an introvert too, that does not mean that i am anti-social .. i just process the world around me in another way .. to render all these emotional stuff i need a lot of silence ;)
So i literally need silence to be creative and i clearly find silence (ao) in my work essential. To make my compositions work I like to see my music as sound-sculptures (three-dimensional), a scenery where one can walk around the notes as it were. There need to be enough space between the notes to accomplish that. Phrasing or in other words : painting (shadows/light) - story telling (expressive/poetry) - or more abstract, making a sculpture (working with a musical architecture) is actually your inner-voice - it is your character, your heart that speaks and expresses through your instrument (and of course some technical skills might be handy ;) that brings music to life !
"Musical phrasing refers to the way a musician shapes a sequence of notes in a passage of music to express an emotion or impression. A musician accomplishes this by interpreting the music—from memory or sheet music—by altering tone, tempo, dynamics, articulation, inflection, and other characteristics." (wikipedia)
I play the composition as i would tell a story - with here and there a little pause because i have to think or with acceleration because i am enthusiastic - then the music will become fluent and natural. Having said this, leaves me the question why is silence so important in music ? It is in my work indeed. My passion, desire, restlessness, insecurity, despair (life is really felt in absence) are filtered in the serenity of my music / harPoems : heart/soul, time, space and silence are essential (without silence no music !), so one can escape into the music, another reality, a beautiful world and maybe even unravel the mystery of life.
"Silence is the lack of audible sound or presence of sounds of very low intensity." (wikipedia)
When there is a lot of space to play around with .. to put each note .. no need to be afraid to take a breath ... be silent for a while (as long as it feels well / trust your gut feeling !) .. listen and surrender to the moment .. enjoy .. and that is what music is all about !
'Such efficient music .. every note counts/touches .. i find that daring and moving for that matter too.' Lex Bohlmeijer - RADIO4
